BREAKING NEWS

Hi All,

 Team Awards

I will be nominating teams for the annual perpetual awards to our committee in the near future. To be eligible, teams must have submitted all their weekly game sheets to the canteen so that the results can be entered. Any team who has three or more sheets missing are not eligible. Please ensure that games sheets are handed into the canteen this week at the latest.

 Team Photos

Team photos will be in your team's pigeon hole this Tuesday night and will be available for collection from Tuesday afternoon by managers for distribution to the players that have ordered team.

 Club Shirts

Players that are yet to receive their Club Supporters shirt, they also have arrived and will also be available for collection from the canteen from Tuesday afternoon.

 Presentation Night

Preparations are well underway for our junior presentation night to be held at the Clubhouse commencing from 4pm on Sunday 14th September.

If new members, coaches or managers are not sure on how the evening unfolds please ask me as I have a tendency that given that this is the 4th one I have organised, to brush over a few things so please accept my apologies in advance. Basically, it everyone helps out as required and things go according to plan, everyone will be on their way home around 8pm after presenting about 500 players with their trophies. For those of you who haven't collected your newsletters yet, please do so as there is a heap of information contained in them for your player's parents. They have been in your pigeon holes for over a week now.

I require information from your team as to how many adults and how many children will be attending from your team. Please ensure that siblings are only counted once (doesn't matter which team as long as they are counted and only counted once). These figures are required asap so that catering arrangements can be made as we will be catering for approximately 1500 people.

I have attached a copy of the rosters for the break up. All I need is 2 people from each team for 30 minutes on the day. As previously stated, if everyone helps out it is not an issue and everything will run like clockwork as in previous years. As you can appreciate, to feed 1500 people and present over 500 trophies it all takes time and your assistance is appreciated. Given that coaches and managers have volunteered their services all year, I don't expect you guys to help out but if each team that is on the roster provides only 2 people, everything will work out fine.

Not all teams are allocated a session. Good luck to those teams, but with 54 teams I didn't need 108 helpers so enjoy the night off sit back and relax.

Congratulations to all the teams that are participating in the finals. I wish you all luck and hope to see you on Grand Final Day. Again, if anyone has any queries or concerns, please contact me. Thanks

 Regards

Ian

Just wanting to pass on a free service that may assist you to better manage your team. It is a free service sponsored by Gatorade Sports Drink and it enables you to send up to 12 (I think) free SMS messages to "your team members". It is a great way of communicating should training be cancelled or we receive late notice of your opposition forfeiting on game day and the like.

You simply need to register as a coach (this can be the manager, team leader or coach &endash; probably the manager) and complete all the details to register your team. You will need mobile phone numbers as well as email addresses for everyone. Once registered, your members will need to log on and register (maybe an excuse for a get together whilst having a few drinks to get to know you team and a team building exercise) so that you can show them the website and explain how it works.

Anyway the link is below if any of you are interested. It does work, it is free and it is great. I would suggest that you ensure that you use your team name (Ie Rebel Rhinos, Rebel Riots whatever) so as to ensure that everyone knows the correct "Gator Team". Cheers

WOOLWORTHS COMMUNITY GRANTS

Hi all,

Here is an opportunity for the Club to receive a $5000 grant for our members. Has anyone got any ideas? No need to complete the application as that will have to go through the Committee but we are simply after ideas at this stage. Let put our creative thinking caps on.

 Regards

 Ian

SSG and Goalkeepers

Goalkeepers are not required in the initial stages of Small Sided Games football.

This is an issue of contention for some parents and clubs who are being exposed to the future of

grassroots football for the first time. Some believe that if there is no goalkeeper, it is not really

football. This is not true as pointed out by Football Federation Australia's National Technical

Director, Rob Baan.

"There are always some exceptions with physically stronger children, but at that age (U6s

U/7s) children are just dribbling the ball and do not have the ability to "shoot" on goal. Because

of that there is not much for a goalkeeper to do and the occasions where she/he would be

required to make a "save" are minimal, therefore not much of a learning factor. Also children at

this age like to be involved in the game and only when they are tired want to be acting as a

"goalkeeper"."

This theme is carried through when the children also moved to 7 v 7 football when they are 9

and 10 years old. Baan explains that even as the children progress, the need for a specialist

goalkeeper is not there.

Baan says "Even at the older age group, most of the time we support the idea of rotating the

goalkeepers and/or using them more as a "sweeper" than as a real goalkeeper who stays on his

line to wait for a ball to come in their direction. The majority of the time it is the parent or coach

who makes the choice and tells a child "you have to be our goalkeeper!!! If you look at

professional players now, the best 'keepers in the world started out as field players and later

found they preferred to play in goals."

"More importantly, the role of a goalkeeper in modern football has changed completely and the

judgment of present goalkeepers is very much depending on the fact if they are capable to act in

the game as "sweeper" who can kick a ball, control a ball and build up the game without using

their hands."
